Description
Scolopendra heros castaneiceps — Texas Redhead Centipede
Few invertebrates command a room like the Texas Redhead. Scolopendra heros castaneiceps is one of the most visually striking centipedes in North America — that bold, chestnut-red head paired with a jet-black body and vivid orange-yellow legs is pure collector bait. This is a species that stops people in their tracks, and it’s native right here in the American Southwest.
As a subspecies of the Giant Desert Centipede, S. h. castaneiceps is a powerhouse predator. It’s fast, confident, and has the attitude to match its size. This is strictly a display species — handle with extreme caution if at all. Its venom is medically significant and its speed is not to be underestimated. That said, in a proper enclosure it’s an absolutely captivating animal that eats well and lives long.
