Description

Scolopendra sp. ‘Lowland Jewel’ — Lowland Jewel Centipede

Nature rarely does gradients. The Scolopendra sp. ‘Lowland Jewel’ is one of the exceptions — and it is breathtaking. This stunning centipede from the lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia pairs a rich, warm chocolate-brown body with vivid orange antennae and a leg color that does something almost no other centipede does: it transitions. The legs at the front of the body are a bold, warm orange — matching the antennae. Moving toward the rear, that orange gradually shifts, deepening and cooling into a vivid blue by the time you reach the last segments. Orange at the front. Blue at the back. Chocolate in between. A living gradient.

The Lowland Jewel is the centipede that makes other centipede keepers jealous.

Why Collectors Love This Species

  • Orange-to-blue leg gradient — the defining feature; legs transition from vivid orange at the front of the body to vivid blue at the rear, creating a natural gradient that is virtually unique in the centipede hobby
  • Orange antennae — bold, warm orange antennae that match the front legs and frame the chocolate body with a warm, glowing accent
  • Chocolate brown body — a rich, warm chocolate-brown body that serves as the perfect neutral canvas for the orange-to-blue leg gradient to play against
  • A living gradient — the color transition from front to rear is gradual and natural; no two viewing angles look quite the same
  • Jewel-series companion — pairs beautifully with the Sumatran Jewel for collectors building a display-quality centipede collection
  • Extreme rarity — seldom available in the US hobby; a genuine trophy specimen

Care Overview

  • Origin: Old World — Southeast Asian lowland rainforest
  • Enclosure: Secure terrestrial setup with escape-proof lid; deep substrate (5–7") with cork bark or flat rock hides
  • Temperature: 76–86°F
  • Humidity: Moderate to high — 75–85%; keep substrate consistently moist on one side; lowland rainforest origin means this species appreciates stable, higher ambient humidity
  • Diet: Large crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized prey; aggressive and powerful feeder
  • Venom: ⚠️ Like all large Old World Scolopendra, this species possesses medically significant venom. Bites are extremely painful and can cause intense localized pain, severe swelling, and systemic symptoms. Never handle — use long tongs for all maintenance without exception.
  • Experience Level: Advanced — for experienced invertebrate keepers only
