Description

Lyssomanes viridis — Magnolia Green Jumping Spider

The Magnolia Green Jumping Spider (Lyssomanes viridis) is one of the most uniquely beautiful jumping spiders in North America — and a true standout even among the famously charismatic Salticidae. Unlike the bold, fuzzy appearance of most jumping spiders, L. viridis is slender and almost ethereal, with a translucent lime-green body, long delicate legs, and enormous forward-facing eyes that glow with iridescent color. The most immediately striking feature? A vivid orange cap-like marking on top of the cephalothorax — sitting right between the eyes like a little helmet — that makes this species instantly recognizable and endlessly photogenic.

Native to the southeastern United States, this species is typically found on the broad leaves of magnolia trees and other smooth-leafed plants, where its translucent green coloration provides near-perfect camouflage. In captivity, they are alert, curious, and engaging — everything you love about jumping spiders, wrapped in an otherworldly package.

Feeding Notes

Lyssomanes viridis is a smaller, more delicate jumping spider and is particularly fond of fruit flies (Drosophila spp.) at all life stages — including adults. Hydei fruit flies are ideal for juveniles and adults alike. Small waxworms, bottle flies, and other small soft-bodied prey can also be offered to larger individuals. Avoid prey items that are too large or hard-bodied.
