Description

Loxosceles blanda — Big Bend Recluse

The Big Bend Recluse (Loxosceles blanda) is a rare and seldom-offered species of recluse spider native to the Big Bend region of west Texas and adjacent areas of northern Mexico. Like all members of the Loxosceles genus, it bears the iconic violin-shaped marking on its cephalothorax and six eyes arranged in three dyads — a hallmark of true recluse spiders. This is a species for the serious collector and advanced keeper only.

In the wild, L. blanda inhabits rocky desert terrain, sheltering in crevices, beneath stones, and in dry debris. In captivity, they do well in a simple, dry enclosure with cork bark or rock hides and minimal substrate. They are secretive, slow-moving spiders that spend most of their time hidden — making them a fascinating study in cryptic behavior rather than an active display animal.

  • Origin: Big Bend region, west Texas & northern Mexico
  • Adult Size: ~0.5–0.75 inch body length (legs to ~1.5 inches)
  • Temperament: Reclusive, non-aggressive — will flee before biting
  • Husbandry: Dry desert setup, cork bark or rock hides, minimal water
  • Venom: Medically significant (necrotic) — handle with extreme caution or not at all
  • Feeding: Small crickets, fruit flies, or other appropriately sized prey
  • Experience Level: Advanced keepers only

⚠️ Venomous Species Notice: Loxosceles blanda possesses cytotoxic venom capable of causing tissue necrosis. This species is strictly for experienced keepers. Please research local regulations regarding recluse spider ownership before purchasing.
