Description

Centruroides vittatus — Striped Bark Scorpion

The Striped Bark Scorpion (Centruroides vittatus) is one of the most recognizable scorpions in North America, native to the south-central United States and northern Mexico. Sporting a slender, tan-to-yellowish body with two distinctive dark dorsal stripes running the length of the abdomen, this species is as visually striking as it is fascinating to keep. Adults typically reach 2–3 inches in length, making them a compact yet impressive display animal.

C. vittatus is an arboreal and bark-dwelling species by nature — in the wild, they tuck themselves beneath loose bark, rocks, and debris. In captivity, they thrive in a simple setup with cork bark hides, a dry substrate, and a small water dish. They are active, fast-moving scorpions that make for an engaging display, especially under UV light, where they glow a brilliant blue-green like all scorpions.

  • Origin: South-central USA & northern Mexico
  • Adult Size: 2–3 inches
  • Temperament: Fast-moving, defensive — best kept as a display animal
  • Husbandry: Dry to semi-arid setup, cork bark hides, shallow water dish
  • Venom: Medically significant — handle with extreme caution or not at all
  • Feeding: Crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized prey items
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

⚠️ Venomous Species Notice: Centruroides vittatus possesses medically significant venom. This species is recommended for experienced keepers only. Please research local regulations regarding scorpion ownership before purchasing.
